The Mai Chau neighborhood is a world away from Hanoi's bustle, set in a lovely valley surrounded by hills. The small town of Mai Chau is uninspiring, but just outside it, a patchwork of rice fields stretches out, punctuated by tiny Thai villages where visitors sleep in traditional stilt houses and wake up to the sound of gushing irrigation streams and birdsong. You can also observe local farmers working in the rice fields. The locals are mostly White Thais, descended from Thai, Laotian, and Chinese tribes. Although most Thai women no longer wear traditional clothing, they are skilled weavers who produce a wide range of traditional textiles. Strong-arm sales tactics are not used by the locals; instead, polite negotiation is the norm.
